Quantum Computing Fund
In July 2017, the then-Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced the Quantum Computing Fund, a $26 million investment to drive the development and commercialisation of quantum computing and to make NSW a global hub for advanced training.
The Quantum Computing Fund has provided:
- $15.4 million over five years to establish the Sydney Quantum Academy (SQA), a partnership between the University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, UTS and Macquarie University to deliver quantum technology skills and training, facilitate industry engagement and attract global talent. To December 2022, the SQA has provided funding for 160 students, including 120 PhDs, eight post-Doctoral Fellowships and 32 undergraduate research fellowships.
- $8.7 million to Silicon Quantum Computing, a UNSW Sydney-led research consortium headed by Professor Michelle Simmons. This investment led to the NSW Government becoming a shareholder in SQC with a holding of 10.5 per cent. On 23 June 2022, in an article published in Nature, the SQC announced it had developed the world's first integrated circuit manufactured at the atomic scale.
- $1 million to the NSW Defence Innovation Network for two collaborative quantum sensing projects in communications and position navigation and timing.
